Thanksgiving??

You know, I think one of the things I miss the most about home is the food. The food on regular days, the food on holidays, just the food!!

Like I miss :

  • Dr Pepper
  • Taco Bell
  • Mexican food (in general, the stuff you get here is HORRIBLE!!!!!!)
  • turkey
  • stuffing
  • mashed potatoes and gravy
  • green bean casserole
I was thinking today...and I was craving Thanksgiving food sooooo bad...anybody want to send me some? I'd love you forever! Just kidding really...but I do miss the food.

Now don't get me wrong, I *love* daal, rice, and the veggies / meat we eat here. I mean, why else would I have gained almost like 20 pounds in the last year and a half? But really, today is just one of those days that I'm feeling homesick! :-) So, I'm going to see what I can about finding turkey for Thanksgiving, if not, I'm sure I can get some around Christmas time!!!

Happy Early Thanksgiving everyone!!

  3. Happy Thanksgiving yawl!

I LOVE green bean casserole...especially the one my MIL makes (the wife's American, I'm not - just like you and DH except that we live in Turkeyland).

You are right about Mexican food. I don't like Dr Pepper though. Seriously, Dr Pepper? Tastes like toothpaste to me!

Love your blog, by the way. All those pictures of fine Bengali dining makes my mouth water....mmmmmm.

  6. I hear you 100%
Been there done that and got the T-shirt...make it a maternity t-shirt, I had quite a few craving of food you can't really find in India or at an affordable price.

I'm not American so I don't do Thanksgiving, but I would totally go to some of the restaurants cooking continental food and are frequented by expats, there were a few in Bangalore that did something for Thanksgiving.
Oh and some supermarket sell small Turkeys around Christmas as in Europe this is the dish of choice for that occasion, and there is still some British heritage there, the Turkeys you find are quite smaller than the monster you find in US and Europe though, which is actually pretty fine by me because they would otherwise not fit in my microwave/convection oven. Be prepare to explain to the butcher in length why you don't want him to cut the bird into pieces though, I have the feeling they somehow thing people want to make Turkey curries or something out of them.

I think there is no other thing than getting the recipes from home and doing them yourself for you and your family...
I remember that I once searched half of Iceland for good fish to make for New Year's Eve (when we *must* eat fish! ;-))

  9. @Saro,

tell me about it...if I can't manage to find it for Thanksgiving, I should be able to find it for Christmas...although, I know it ain't gonna be the same! *sigh* :-) it'll suffice until I can get home and get my mommy to make me some!

  11. I guess I can't see myself craving any of those things, but Im sure there would be others... Im so weird that I constantly have to eat lots of variety and get bored of food easily. However, not as much if someone else is cooking, lol.

On a positive note, I think it would be possible to make at least the mashed potatoes and some mexican food there (homemade). And probably a better version of green bean casserole, without the canned soup stuff.

  12. I empathize.
I miss the food I grew up with, though i would never have imagined that. My Mom really helps me a lot by sending a packet once a month with the things I miss most, and each time I go home I gain weight because I will spend a month gorging on all my favorites.
I hope you found your turkey. Did you?
